
Alcohol Screening & Brief Interventions
The aim of this training?
To enable practitioners to competently and confidently raise and respond to alcohol issues with their patients/service users, including delivering effective Brief Interventions.
Who is this training for?
GPs and other Primary Care practitioners providing a screening and brief intervention service. All medical staff working towards HEAT targets for Brief Interventions.
This course may also benefit practitioners of other statutory and non-statutory services who work with service users who present with alcohol-related issues.
Training Sessions
NHS Health Scotland devised the course content. It corresponds to SIGN 74 Guidelines on the Management of Harmful Drinking and Dependence in Primary Care.
Sessions can be tailored to suit your needs and availability.
Learning Outcomes
- Raising the issue of alcohol with patients/service users
- Screening using the FAST tool and providing feedback
- Delivering key components of effective Brief Interventions

Facilitators
Our facilitators are trained by NHS Heatlh Scotland. They have extensive experience of alcohol counselling & psychotherapy with FASS, and have backgrounds in medical and occupational health nursing. Sessions may be delivered in partnership with NHS Fife Health Promotion.
