Alcohol Diversion Scheme Enjoys Success!

Forty referrals were made to the Fife Alcohol Support Service in September new figures reveal with thirty four males and six females taking advantage of the scheme.

A breakdown of the crimes associated with the referrals included Breach of the Peace, Drunk and Incapable and Consuming Alcohol in a Public Place with the majority of offenders between the ages of 16 and 20.

Inspector David Latto of Fife Police said "This initiative is providing an awareness of the effects of alcohol both on the consumer and wider society which otherwise the participants would not get. This is a positive brief intervention with the aim to reduce alcohol related crime and offences and make our streets safer."

Jim Bett, Service Manager with Fife Alcohol Support Services who is delivering the training said "FASS is delighted with the wonderful success of the Diversion Scheme during September.

The agency provides an attractive, non-threatening alcohol education course designed to help anyone avoid the often painful and embarrassing pitfalls that binge drinking can bring. The course is proving to be both a popular and enjoyable experience for many participants.

Most importantly, 92% of people completing the course report that they are confident they can drink safely in future and avoid incidents of social disorder, accident and violence.

For all concerned with the project, it is gratifying that young people are gaining the skills and knowledge they need to keep themselves and others safe whilst enjoying a night out."
